For the duration of the six-week trial, Johnny Depp’s defamation case against Amber Heard dominated news coverage. A month later, it is still a hot topic as both parties deal with the fallout. There were several factors that contributed to this case in particular gaining so much attention.

High interest was generated by the seriousness of the accusations that the celebrities threw at one another, the courtroom antics (which occasionally involved alpacas), and the public’s opportunity to see everything unfold on television. However, Naomie Harris, a co-star of Depp’s in Pirates of the Caribbean, stated that she considered the entire situation to be somewhat “disturbing.”

In the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, Naomie Harris, who played voodoo priestess Tia Dalma, spoke about the trial, in which the general public overwhelmingly supported her coworker, Johnny Depp.

It was impossible to avoid the trial’s media coverage, and Harris claimed that it distracted attention away from other grave events that were taking place. She told The Independent: It’s hard not to have followed that case because it was so rammed down our throats every day.

It was all over social media, all over the news, everywhere. I think there’s something quite disturbing about that, actually, because there are some serious events happening in the world that deserve much greater airtime than they’re having because this kind of thing is being aired.

The actress specifically brought up Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking trial, claiming that it was more relevant and important than a majority of what was going on between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. For aiding in Epstein’s recruiting and abuse of teenage girls, Maxwell was given a 20-year prison term on June 28th by a federal judge.

The actress, who received an Oscar nomination for her performance in Moonlight, asserted that the defamation lawsuit ought to have been addressed quietly by the couple’s previous partners. In the end, the jury concluded that the Jack Sparrow actor should receive $15 million, of which $10 million in compensatory and $5 million in punitive damages (which were reduced to $350,000).

A $2 million settlement was given to Amber Heard as part of a $100 million countersuit, giving her a slight victory. According to the actress’ lawyers, she cannot afford to pay the $8.35 million that is due (though there were opinions on that as well after Heard was seen flying via private plane following that assertion).

Naomie Harris probably won’t like it if their ongoing legal disputes continue to take up most of the news, especially Amber Heard’s, since she didn’t enjoy the attention the defamation case received from the public.

Authorities in Australia are currently looking into whether the Aquaman actress lied about bringing her Yorkshire terriers (Pistol and Boo) into the country undeclared in 2015. As a result, the actress is still under investigation for perjury.

For his part, Johnny Depp will appear in court once more to answer for an assault accusation from 2018 that was related to his work on the film City of Lies. It’s likely that the public will be interested in these cases given the media attention Depp and Amber Heard have received.
